PDU Whips & Power Cord Basics

A PDU cable, often called a PDU or power “whip,” run underneath the raised data center floor to help distribute electricity from a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) or Uninterruptable Power System (UPS) to servers and IT equipment.

A PDU whip, often referred to as a PDU cable, is an essential part of the power flow process in a data center. The selection of the right whip can help to increase your power usage effectiveness (PUE). To learn more about the role of a PDU whip, check out our infographic, “What is a PDU Whip? The Simple Power Flow of a Data Center.”

There are three main components of a PDU whip: 1) Receptacle – on one end, the receptacle supplies power to the equipment, 2) Cable – the cable itself conducts power from the tail to the receptacle, 3) Tail – on the other end, a set of wires, or the tail, connects into the PDU. Each piece of equipment varies in receptacle type, and requires different numbers and sizes of wires within the PDU cable.

The PDU whip runs under the data center room floor to deliver power from the PDU to the end-receptacle. A power cord delivers the electricity from the receptacle to power a network device or wiring closet. Without these essential pieces, your mission-critical data center would not run.
